The Renewal by Andersen Kansas vs Nebraska Border Battle Banquet & Keynote Speakers Announced!
Wichita, Kan. — May 13th, 2009 — The Southard Corporation/Renewal by Andersen, one of the largest home improvement companies in the Midwest, is proud to announce the banquet date and banquet keynote speakers for its first annual charitable event, The Renewal by Andersen Border Battle. The basketball games on Saturday, June 20th at Hartman Arena in Park City, KS will feature recently graduated senior all-stars from Kansas vs Nebraska.
The banquet will be held on Friday, June 19th inside Hartman Arena located in Park City, Kansas. The banquet will honor the 56 Border Battle participants from the states of Kansas and Nebraska. The keynote speakers for the banquet will be legendary University of Kansas broadcaster Max Falkenstien and former Claflin, Southwest Missouri State & WNBA player Jackie Stiles.
ÒWe are ecstatic to have two of the greatest sports figures in the history of Kansas, as well as the nation, as our keynote speakers for our first inaugural Border Battle Banquet. Not only are they legendary sports figures but they both are great people. Both the games and the banquet are going to be a lot of fun and raise a lot of money for charityÓ says Wes Race, Chairman of the Renewal by Andersen Border Battle.
In his sixty year career at the University of Kansas (1946-2006), Falkenstien has covered over 1,750 men's basketball games and 650 men's football games — a span that included every game played in Allen Fieldhouse until his retirement and was one of the longest announcing tenures in sports. His name and "number" (60, for the number of years he had broadcast for the Jayhawks), were also hung on a banner in Allen Fieldhouse with those of the other great players that have played for KU. This retirement ceremony made Falkenstien the 27th KU basketball person so honored by the University, and the first non-athlete. Mr. Falkenstien is a member of the College Athletics Hall of Fame and the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame and has won numerous awards over his famed career.
As a junior in high school Jackie Stiles once scored 61 points in 17 minutes of the opening game of the season. By the end of her senior year she becomes the leading scorer for boys and girls in Kansas High School history. She then moved on to college and became the all time leading scorer in NCAA division one basketball history with 3,393 points.
In her college career she procured a number of outstanding awards including: Three time Missouri Valley Player of the year, won the Wade Trophy for best female basketball player in the nation, and the Broderick cup for college women athlete of the year in 2001.Verizon Academic All American 1st team and the Kodak 1st team All American.
In the 2001 WNBA draft she was picked fourth by the Portland Fire. She captured the rookie of the year title that summer with a scoring average of 14.9 points. She was named to the 2001 WNBA All-Star team. JackieÕs career was one that every player dreams of and she has dedicated herself to helping young athletes around the country achieve their dreams.
